Zohran Mamdani becomes campaign issue on suburban LI as mailers paint him as soft-on-crime poster boy

City mayoral hopeful Zohran Mamdani has become the bogeyman in the race for Nassau County’s top prosecutor — as suburban Republicans paint the socialist as the poster boy for “dangerous” soft-on-crime policies.

Nassau District Attorney Anne Donnelly has been slamming Mamdani as she seeks re-election while the local GOP sends out mailers linking the city candidate to Donnelly’s Democratic opponent, career prosecutor Nicole Aloise.

“Mamdani’s plan to turn New York into a sanctuary for criminals is downright dangerous,” Donnelly said in a statement to The Post, linking Mamdani to Democratic Socialists of America policies that have pushed to soften enforcement on misdemeanor crimes.

“If Mr. Mamdani has his way, violent offenders and sexual predators will walk free, drunk drivers will remain on the roads, and laws against assault and animal cruelty will go unenforced. This is a threat to public safety.”

Aloise not only distanced herself from the candidate — but said he shouldn’t be elected mayor in the Big Apple.

“Zohran Mamdani is the wrong choice for mayor and I disagree with him on cashless bail and defunding our police,” the Democrat said in a statement. “I’m focused on keeping Nassau County safe and the biggest threat to that is Anne Donnelly.”

Aloise claimed Donnelly had turned the county into a safe haven for criminals and noted a slew of prosecutors having left the incumbent’s office.

Donnelly’s decision to make Mamdani a campaign issue is part of a widespread Republican strategy to tie suburban Democrats to the candidate and the DSA, with the thought that their liberal policies will be poison at the ballot box outside of the left-leaning urban centers of the state.

The New York State Republican Party has already sent out a mailer to Nassau voters showing a collage of Mamdani and Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul behind Aloise.

“Extreme Politicians Have Created Crime Fighters’ Worst Nightmare,” the mailer says, with what looks like a haunted house and bats in the background.

Donnelly on Thursday is holding a press conference in front of the Nassau County Courthouse in Garden City, where she and Assemblyman Edward Ra (R-Nassau) will announce legislation to bar any district in the state from adopting a blanket policy that “prohibits or materially limits the enforcement of any criminal offense.”

“This commonsense law ensures that every crime, from theft to assault, is taken seriously, and every offender held accountable,” Donnelly said. “No elected official can put ideology above the safety of the people they are sworn to protect.

“We will not stand by while radical politicians try to dismantle our justice system and turn neighborhoods into safe havens for criminals.”

Ra said New Yorkers “have had enough of radical, pro-criminal experiments that undermine the rule of law and embolden offenders.”

“Law-abiding citizens deserve safety and peace of mind, and we will not allow politicians to put that at risk for political theater,” Ra added.

But the bill would likely be treated as dead on arrival in the Democratic-controlled state Assembly and Senate in Albany.

The major county offices in Long Island — in Nassau and Suffolk Counties — turned red after Democrats in Albany rammed through the unpopular bail reform law in 2019.

Donnelly had turned the reform into a DA campaign issue in 2021 as she faced opponent Todd Kaminsky, a former state Senator and federal prosecutor who voted for the bail law.

Mamdani’s campaign declined to comment about him being used as fodder in the Nassau DA’s race. He has recently backed away from his past statements that supported defunding the police.

His campaign insisted on Tuesday that doesn’t believe in getting rid of all misdemeanor crimes — as the candidate tried to distance himself from the radical national DSA platform to do just that.
