Even if they did, no one would suggest it should be a higher priority than third base, starting pitching or relief pitching. So, barring injury, Volpe will have plenty of short-term runway to try to prove the Yankee brass’ undying optimism surrounding him correct, and that is the barest minimum.
Within the context of this year’s pennant race, in which the Yankees pulled back within three games of the Blue Jays on Ben Rice’s go-ahead, ninth-inning home run Tuesday night at Rogers Centre, Volpe has certainly become a talking point and a punching bag for parts of the fan base, and that likely will continue unless he gets hot at the plate.
