Yankees’ Giancarlo Stanton expected to return against Angels
BOSTON – At long last, the Yankees have a series circled for Giancarlo Stanton’s return — at least in pencil.
The club is expecting Stanton to be activated off the IL during their upcoming four-game series against the Angels in The Bronx, with his season debut potentially happening either Monday or Tuesday, Aaron Boone indicated on Saturday.

“I did talk to him today, he feels good,” Boone said before the Yankees faced the Red Sox. “So we’ll see what that means. But I expect him in some way, shape or form in the Angels series to be in play.”
Stanton, who has been out since the spring with tendinitis in both elbows, was initially set to play a fourth rehab game on Saturday with Double-A Somerset.
But he was not in their lineup because of the chance for poor weather, so it is possible he could play there on Sunday instead.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. returned to the lineup Saturday after missing the past two games with a tight left groin.
“I think we should be in a good spot,” Boone said.
Nothing has been finalized yet, but Jake Cousins is trending toward undergoing Tommy John surgery, Boone said, which would sideline the reliever for the rest of this season and at least part of next year.
Luis Gil (lat strain) is still just throwing bullpen sessions and is about 10 days to two weeks away from facing hitters for the first time.
At this point, his potential return is looking more likely to be some time in August.
Boone had already talked to MLB’s senior vice president of on-field operations, Michael Hill, by the time he spoke with reporters after Friday’s loss about the play that got him ejected — DJ LeMahieu’s line drive down the first base line that was called foul on the field and stood after replay review.
Asked if he would support MLB using Hawkeye technology on fair/foul calls — like tennis uses for in/out replays — Boone deadpanned, “I tried to put this behind me.”
“I thought we had a good look [Friday] night,” said Boone, who thought a quarter of the ball was on the line. “I think we have so many [camera] angles that usually you’re able to find what you need. I think replay for the most part does a really good job. Maybe, I don’t know. I haven’t given it that much thought.”
Boone’s ejection was not a shock, after he threw his gum in the direction of home plate umpire John Tumpane, but he was surprised to find out that LeMahieu also got tossed for telling first base umpire Jeremie Rehak he made a “brutal call.”
“Hearing what he said, probably even more so,” Boone said.
