Yankees’ Clarke Schmidt likely to undergo Tommy John surgery


The Yankees’ season started with a pair of rotation injury hits in spring training, when Luis Gil was diagnosed with a lat strain and Gerrit Cole needed Tommy John surgery.

And Saturday, they were dealt another one — which could impact their plans ahead of the trade deadline.

Clarke Schmidt, who exited his most recent start with forearm soreness, tore his UCL and will likely need the second Tommy John surgery of his pitching career, manager Aaron Boone said before the Yankees and the Mets continued the Subway Series at Citi Field.

Schmidt has developed into what Boone described as one of the most underrated pitchers in baseball, posting a 3.32 ERA across 14 starts this year and even tossing seven hitless innings against the Orioles last month.

But now, a Yankees rotation already searching for options will need to adjust again.
