Garcia threw 53 pitches in 2 2/3 innings on Friday while giving up three runs, and his reward was a DFA, less than a week after the Yankees claimed him off waivers from the Mets.
The Yankees could have opted to bring up Winans to make a spot start Friday — with Cam Schlittler (upper-arm soreness) and Max Fried (blister) both dealing with injury concerns that the Yankees did not believe warranted stints on the injured list — but instead they rolled the dice with a bullpen game, which backfired.
Will Warren and Marcus Stroman are starting Saturday and Sunday against the Braves, but Winans will offer length out of the bullpen.

The former Braves right-hander last pitched last Friday for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, throwing 76 pitches.
In two appearances (one start) for the Yankees this season, Winans has given up six earned runs across 6 1/3 innings.
