With the match resulting in a 3-3 draw at the end of 120 minutes, Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo saved the game-deciding kick from Nottingham Forest forward Omari Hutchinson to send them into the fourth round of the world’s oldest cup competition.
Reynolds, who was in attendance for his club’s victory, was spotted in a celebratory crowd high-fiving fans following Wrexham’s first win over a Premier League club since they beat Middlesbrough in the FA Cup in December 1999.
Wrexham got out with a two-goal lead early following scores from Liberato Cacace and Oliver Rathbone, with Dominic Hyam scoring on a header in the 74th minute.
Despite being down two late in the match, Nottingham Forest forward Callum Hudson-Odoi scored two quick goals, with the game-tying score coming in the 89th minute.
“I always want us to acquit well when these big days come, and I thought we did,” Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson told ESPN following the win. “Unlucky not to win in normal time — I felt it deflate. We went into extra time and it was a feeling of acceptance almost in the ground and the team and we had to raise ourselves again.”
Under Reynolds’ and Mac’s ownership, Wrexham has earned three straight promotions to England’s second tier.
Friday’s victory comes shortly after the Hollywood celebrities sold a minority stake of the club to Apollo Sports Capital, a U.S.-based private equity firm.
“From day one, we wanted to build a sustainable future for Wrexham Association Football Club,” Reynolds and Mac said in a joint statement. “And to do it with a little heart and humor. “The dream has always been to take this club to the Premier League while staying true to the town. Growth like that takes world-class partners who share our vision and ambition, and Apollo absolutely does.
“We have known Al Tylis, the CEO of Apollo Sports Capital, for many years and are thrilled to now have ASC join the Wrexham family as we take the next step forward together.”
