World Series Game 6’s ninth inning was complete chaos

This year’s World Series will have a Game 7 — but fans might be talking about the ninth inning of Game 6 for a long, long time.

The Dodgers held on for a 3-1 win over the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre on Friday night, but it was how they staved off elimination that made this game all the more exciting.

With a runner on first against reliever Roki Sasaki in the bottom of the ninth, Toronto’s Addison Barger smacked an extra-base hit into the left-center field gap before the ball became lodged at the bottom of the wall.

Dodgers center fielder Justin Dean and left fielder Enrique Hernandez immediately held up their arms to signal to the umpires that the play should be ruled a dead ball and prevent the baserunners from scoring.

But before everything was sorted out, Blue Jays pinch-runner Myles Straw kept on running on the way home, which would’ve cut Toronto’s deficit to 3-2.

However, he was sent back to third on what was called — and confirmed — to be a ground-rule double.

Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts didn’t want to see the season slip away, so he pulled Sasaki for Tyler Glasnow, a rare relief appearance for the right-handed starter.

The move paid quick dividends, as Glasnow got Ernie Clement to weakly pop out to first baseman Freddie Freeman on one pitch.

It was the next play, though, that truly made this ninth inning one for the ages.

Toronto infielder Andres Gimenez floated a liner the opposite way to left field. Hernandez, playing shallow, easily made the catch before realizing Barger drifted much too far off second base. He quickly tossed it in, and his low throw was picked off the dirt by second baseman Miguel Rojas, who kept his foot on the bag to complete the double play.

Hernandez admitted that the catch almost didn’t happen.

“Given the situation, really fast guy at second base, I was like, I’m going to play really, really shallow and if he hits it over my head, kudos to him,” Hernandez told Fox after the game. “I fell like his pop is more to the pull side. Somehow, I was able to hear the bat broke, even with that crowd. The crazy thing is that I didn’t no idea where the ball was because it was in the lights the whole time.

“Given the situation of the game and World Series on the line and how good I was hitting, I was like, ‘It’s going to hit me in the face, but I’m not stopping, I’m not pulling up.’ And then at the very end the ball came out of the lights and into my glove.”

Barger admitted to reporters that he got a “bad read” on the play, thinking the ball wasn’t going to go as far as it did.

MLB’s Sarah Langs reported it is the first-ever 7-4 double play to end a postseason game.

Rarity or not, the Dodgers will take the outcome.
