“I get out of bed, and then when I walk out, I see her standing in the hallway, holding this knife,” Jane recalled, referring to the weapon later identified as scissors.

CCTV footage captured the chaos as Jane slammed the bedroom door shut, only for the intruder to attack it.

Steve held the door firmly as Jane called for help.

“It was like a horror movie, I guess … Although all I had to do was hold the door close cause I didn’t know what was going on. I had no idea how many people were here,” Steve said.

When the attacker moved toward the back door, Steve acted.

“I’ve got to do what I’ve got to do to protect Jane, us. There was seconds, there wasn’t long at all,” he said.

Emerging from the bedroom in his underpants, Steve confronted the woman.

A desperate struggle followed. The pair wrestled on the floor as the woman kicked chairs out from under the table.

“It was exhausting. It’s like she had superpowers because she was very strong,” Steve said.

Jane located the scissors during the scuffle while staying on the phone with emergency operators.

“It’s like, for ages … I keep saying, ‘Hurry up, please, we need police.’ And the lady said, ‘They’re coming,’” Jane said

“Our hands are together, and I said, ‘Make sure you cuff the right one,’” Steve said.

Queensland Police confirmed she was trespassing while armed with scissors and found with a small quantity of methamphetamine.

Steve’s security cameras, installed a month prior for medical reasons due to a history of fainting, recorded the entire incident.

“Well, we’ve only had it there for a month, so we’re lucky we got it,” Steve said.

The couple described the island, usually a peaceful refuge from city crime, as now feeling unsafe.

“Easygoing life here … We’ve always left the house unlocked. Not anymore. So it’s a different place,” Steve said.

Reflecting on the trauma, Jane said the entire ordeal was “very scary”.

“Until now, I’m still panicking. Did you lock the door? Did you lock the gate?”

Steve also urged others to stay vigilant.

“Lock your doors. Stay safe. You just never know anymore. Sadly, you don’t, and that is what’s scary.”

Police say charges against the woman are expected to be laid.
