Where things stand with Colts, Philip Rivers after shock workout
The Colts are weighing their options after bringing in 44-year-old Philip Rivers for a workout.
Desperate to try to save their season after Daniel Jones’ season-ending Achilles injury, Indianapolis shocked the NFL world when news broke Monday they were bringing in their one-time quarterback for a visit, and the workout actually already happened Monday night. Reports initially said he’d work out Tuesday.

Now the franchise is “mulling things over,” per Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, who added he believes there’s a “decent chance” the two sides agree to a deal.

Rivers, whose 44th birthday was Monday, hasn’t played in the NFL since 2020, which was his lone season with the Colts after 16 years with the Chargers. He has been coaching St. Michael Catholic HS in Fairhope, Ala., where his son, Gunner, is a four-star QB recruit in the class of 2027.
With 2023 No. 4 overall pick Anthony Richardson still sidelined with an orbital fracture, sixth-round rookie Riley Leonard — who grew up in Fairhope and was tutored by Rivers ahead of this year’s draft — is the likely starter on Sunday against the Seahawks, if he is cleared after suffering a minor knee injury.

Colts head coach Shane Steichen worked with Rivers during eight of his nine seasons on the Chargers’ coaching staff, which included a four-year run as quarterbacks coach.
The Colts were flying high as the biggest surprise in the NFL this season at 8-2 last month as Jones, who signed a one-year, $14 million contract last offseason, authored a resurgent season.
But the team has lost three straight, including Sunday’s defeat to the Jaguars, who took control of the AFC South, and they’re now outside of the playoff picture, as they currently lose a tiebreaker for the final wild-card spot to the surging Texans.
Indianapolis faces an uphill battle to get to the postseason with a daunting schedule; after visiting Seattle this Sunday, they host the 49ers and Jaguars before finishing with a road game against the Texans.
