What the Knicks want in Tom Thibodeau’s successor

A brief update as the Knicks coaching search rounds into Week 3:

They’ve interviewed at least three candidates, all either free agents (Taylor Jenkins, Mike Brown) or assistants (Minnesota’s Micah Nori). They sought permission to interview several head coaches under contract, none of whom received permission from their respective clubs to entertain the Knicks. According to the Dallas Morning News, they “expressed interest” in former Mavericks assistant Sean Sweeney, who is now out of the mix after accepting the lead assistant gig in San Antonio. Sweeney’s former head coach in Dallas, Jason Kidd, remains a small possibility as he angles for a contract extension with the Mavericks.

Another assistant to keep an eye on — Miami’s Chris Quinn, though a source last week said the Knicks hadn’t yet requested permission from the Heat for an interview.

The slow-moving process, without a clear succession plan for Tom Thibodeau, has been pitched as acts of due diligence, the timing of which is of little concern to the Knicks because there’s no competition — they currently have the only vacancy.
