Wednesday Season 2 Ending Explained:

While the entire season has been teasing an epic showdown between Isaac Night (Owen Painter) — a.k.a. the brain-eating zombie formerly known as Slurp — Francoise Galpin (Frances O’Connor), and Tyler Galpin (Hunter Doohan), things kick off immediately in the Season 2 finale with Wednesday, Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones), and Hester (Joanna Lumley) uniting to save Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez). At the end of Episode 7, “Woe Me the Money,” Pugsley went out to the Skull Tree and was kidnapped by Isaac, who, it turns out, wants to use him to get back at Morticia and Gomez (Luis Guzman) for his initial death.

Episode 8 explains that back in the day, when Morticia, Gomez, and Isaac all attended Nevermore Academy together, Isaac attempted to Mad Scientist Francoise out of her Hyde ability by using Gomez as a source of energy to power his machine. Terrified at the thought of losing Gomez, a young Morticia cut off Isaac’s hand and shut down the machine, foiling his plan and ultimately killing him in the process. One thing that did not die, though? Isaac’s hand, which was somehow brought back to life as, you guessed it, Thing! Yes, the Addams’ trusty finger-walking sidekick is really a part of Isaac Night. In fact, Thing is an anagram of Night, and was discovered by Morticia all those decades ago when she first foiled Isaac’s plan.

Isaac, motivated to stop Wednesday from continuously interfering with his plan, calls upon her to meet him in the forest at midnight, which is when he steals back his hand and buries Wednesday in the grave below the Skull Tree. Thankfully, the ever-bothersome and nosy Agnes (Evie Templeton) was watching the whole thing while invisible, and she goes to retreive Enid from the Lupin Cages to help her save Wednesday. Bad news: This now puts Enid in immediate and almost certain danger of turning into a wolf indefinitely.

Earlier in the season, Ms. Capri (Billie Piper) explained that if Enid — if she really is the Alpha they believe her to be — turns into a wolf on the night of the full moon, she may never turn back. What’s worse, Alpha wolves who turn permanently are then hunted by other wolves as a form of “self-policing,” Capri tells Enid. After getting Wednesday out of the grave, the Addams family heads to Isaac’s laboratory at Nevermore to save Pugsley and shut down the Nights/Galpins, once and for all. Sans Enid’s help, however, as she is now a wolf and MIA.

Thankfully, the group is able to successfully stop Isaac and Francoise, who had a secret plan of their own, opting to try and rid Tyler of his Hyde abilities rather than Francoise. This causes both Tyler and Francoise to break into their alter forms and fight until the elder falls off the gable of Nevermore to her death as her own son watches. He doesn’t seem all that broken up about it, though, because he later tells Capri that he’s done with mothers and masters. This conversation happens as Capri tells him that she is creating a support group for people like him and that she wants him to join — it looks like Tyler’s dealings with redheads are far from over.

Back in the lab, while Isaac is holding Wednesday by the throat and threatening to snap her neck, Morticia appeals to Thing, still attached to Isaac’s wrist, and begs it to let Wednesday go. While Isaac laughs at this attempt, Morticia’s half-baked plan to save her daughter miraculously works and results in Wednesday being freed and Thing taking out Isaac’s mechanical beating heart, killing him and putting this uneasy chapter to rest.

In the final moments of Wednesday Season 2, Wednesday and Morticia bid their spirit guide, Principal Weems (Gwendoline Christie), adieu as she says she has served her purpose and will leave the living world to its own devices. As Wednesday and Morticia put their differences aside, Morticia — who was reluctant to speak about her “no longer with us” sister Ophelia earlier in the season — hands over Ophelia’s journals as a peace offering.

With the journal in tow and her promise to save Enid unwavering, Wednesday calls upon Uncle Fester (Fred Armisen) — who you may remember was part of the Willow Hill breakout in Season 2 Part 1 — to help her track down Enid, who Agnes located near the Canadian border. Just as the two embark on their road trip together, Wednesday in Uncle Fester’s sidecar, she flips through Ophelia’s journals and receives a premonition of Ophelia in a dark and dingy basement.

While Wednesday may not know what the message means as she stares at a terrifying hand-drawn picture in Ophelia’s notebook, the show lets the viewers in on a little secret: Ophelia is not only alive, she’s in Hester’s basement! While we never see her face and only see her scribbling on a wall, we can all but assume this new character will have a major role in Wednesday Season 3, whenever it arrives.

The good news is that fans will not have to wait another three years to find out where the story goes from here after that surprise ending. In a recent interview with DECIDER, executive producers and series co-creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar said that after the long delay between Season 1 and Season 2 — due in part to the show moving filming locations and the WGA and SAG strikes of 2023 — the next installment is already underway.

“Season 3 will definitely be coming faster than Season 2,” Gough told DECIDER as Millar added, “We share everyone’s frustrations in terms of the time it’s taken to get back on the air. But the aim is for Season 3 to come much faster. That’s definitely our goal.”

That’s news worthy of celebrating. We cannot wait to see what Wednesday Addams and the rest of the Nevermore Academy crew get up to in the next block of episodes.
