Philadelphia also received a 2026 sixth-round pick in exchange for a 2026 fifth-rounder and a 2027 seventh.

The 32-year-old Wentz is now set to back up J.J. McCarthy this season, after spending 2024 in the same role with the Chiefs behind star Patrick Mahomes.

McCarthy is set to make his NFL debut in Week 1 against the Bears after missing his entire rookie season last year with a knee injury.

Tanner McKee, who was set to be the Eagles’ backup QB, has a finger injury, so Howell gives Philadelphia insurance behind Jalen Hurts if McKee has to miss time.

Minnesota acquired Howell via trade with the Seattle Seahawks during draft week, but the 24-year-old has had an up-and-down preseason as undrafted free agent Max Brosmer has out-played him.

A fifth-round pick in 2022, Howell has already been traded three times. He is now entering the final season of his rookie contract after spending his first two years with Washington.

Last season, Wentz played in two games as a reserve. The only game he started was the final regular-season game against the Broncos, once Kansas City had clinched the No. 1 overall seed in the AFC playoffs.
