Tagovailoa made the comments after Miami dropped its fifth game through the first six weeks of the season.
“Well, I think it starts with the leadership and helping articulate that for the guys,” Tagovailoa said after Miami’s 29-27 loss to the Chargers.
“And then what we’re were expecting out of the guys, right? We’re expecting this, are we getting that, are we not getting that? We have guys showing up to player-only meetings late, guys not showing up to player-only meetings. Like, there’s a lot that goes into that. Do we have to make this mandatory, do we not have to make this mandatory? So it’s a lot of things of that nature that we’ve gotta get cleaned up, and it starts with the little things like that.”
Tagovailoa clarified that some players had been late to player-only meetings, and coach Mike McDaniel described it as “something on his mind with regard to the specific meetings with a couple of individuals that he was trying to get corrected with direct communication.”
Sunday’s loss came down to a last-minute field goal by Chargers kicker Cameron Dicker to help Los Angeles topple Miami, as things continued to spiral downward for the Dolphins.

“I think that the only way to lead as far as where we’ve been as a program,” McDaniel said. “I think we’ve opened the air on all of that, and it’s very clear how we hold people accountable and what’s non-negotiable. Clearly, he’s sending a message.”
McDaniel, who has been on the hot seat as the season has continued to nose-dive, did add that he felt all the players have “delivered on” whatever he’s asked of them so far.
“I’m sure whoever [Tagovailoa] is talking to, they’ll deliver as well,” he said.
