Trump’s Gaza peace plan: Letters to the Editor

The Issue: Negotiations between Hamas and Israel to enact President Trump’s 20-point peace plan.

Hamas agreed to release all hostages — though it could still claim it cannot find some bodies — but sidestepped key conditions, specifically the requirement that it disarms and relinquishes any political control over Gaza (“Positive step towards peace,” Oct. 7).

This evasiveness, along with Hamas demanding a guarantee that later stages of the cease-fire — with a permanent cessation of hostilities and a full Israeli withdrawal — will take place, could potentially give Hamas a chance to re-arm.

Hamas’ negotiating tactics attempt to avoid accountability while preserving its military and political power.

“To the victor belong the spoils” is true for every country except Israel.

Japan and Germany were in better shape than Hamas is in Gaza and both countries were made to surrender unconditionally.

Why are members of Hamas given a seat at the table?

They lost and their land is devastated.

Better yet, why is Israel required to release terrorists with blood on their hands?

These are hardcore individuals who will most likely return to terrorism.

The obvious answer is that Israel is held to a very high standard by most of the world.

I’m confident that it is as obvious to President Trump as it is to me that Hamas is doing what it always does: dangling the possibility of compliance by saying it will release the hostages if certain conditions are met.

But the conditions are the same nonsense Hamas has repeatedly insisted on, which will never be acceptable to Israel or its allies.

Unfortunately, there is only one way to have peace in Gaza and that requires the physical elimination of Hamas.

Anything short of its total destruction will not end well.

The words of Hamas are meaningless.

Terrorists cannot be trusted.

Truth lies in action.

President Trump has to realize that Hamas may not be willing to negotiate all 20 points to put this thing to bed for good.

With that being said, any delay will just further the bloodshed and destruction of this war.

Should this proposal fail, then all hope is lost and we may never see any hostages released while some of them are still alive.

The Issue: President Trump ordering National Guard deployment to Portland, Ore. amid anti-ICE protests.

Portland is in a state of apprehended insurrection — that is, on the brink of an uprising (“Trump defies court,” Oct. 6).

Republicans should highlight this with a resolution declaring the insurrection and giving President Trump full power to federalize the police and National Guard.

One recent day of bloodshed saw: 14 shot, two fatally, in Alabama’s state capital; two shot, one fatally, at South Carolina State U.; two children killed, two injured in a Texas shooting.

What do all three have in common?

They all unfolded in red states won by Trump.

Yet Trump wants to pit US soldiers against “the enemy within” Portland.

Why not dispatch troops to Alabama, South Carolina and Texas as well, sir?

Is it because those states didn’t hurt your feelings during the election?

The idiot leaders running Portland, Ore. are out of control.

Is it the Pacific Ocean that makes left-coast people stupid?
