Trump warns Congress GOPers ‘no one goes on vacation’ until Big Beautiful Bill is done

President Trump on Tuesday warned congressional GOPers that “no one goes on vacation” until his proposed One Big Beautiful Bill Act gets across the finish line — and set the Senate’s deadline for this week.

Trump’s laying down of the law comes as the Republicans appear to have stalled over many key provisions of the proposed legislative bundle — and just as they were set to break at the end of this week for recess for the July 4th holiday.

“To my friends in the Senate, lock yourself in a room if you must, don’t go home, and GET THE DEAL DONE THIS WEEK,” Trump wrote on Truth Social as he jetted off to The Hague for the 2025 NATO summit.

“Work with the House so they can pick it up, and pass it, IMMEDIATELY. NO ONE GOES ON VACATION UNTIL IT’S DONE,” he said.

Once the measure clears the Senate, it will have to make its way through the House again before it can arrive on Trump’s desk for his signature.

Top party leaders echoed Trump’s assertion that lawmakers can’t leave town for the Fourth of July recess until both chambers of Congress pass the act.

“We will remain here until this reconciliation bill is passed,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) said. “By placing it on President Trump’s desk by the 4th of July, we will be ensuring that future generations of Americans can live in safety and prosperity.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) also privately told Republicans in the lower chamber to keep their schedules flexible amid negotiations for the megabill.

“Now that we have made PEACE abroad, we must finish the job here at home by passing ‘THE GREAT, BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL,’ and getting the Bill to my desk, ASAP. It will be a Historic Present for THE GREAT PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” Trump added on Truth Social.

The proposed One Big Beautiful Bill Act is intended to be Trump’s signature legislative achievement of the year, featuring bolstered border security, an extension of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, no taxes on tips, no taxes on overtime pay, an array of spending cuts and many other conservative wish-list items.

After the House passed its version of the act last month, the Senate began making significant modifications to the mammoth package, but many of those changes have rankled moderates and fiscal hawks alike.

For example, the Senate Finance Committee unveiled its adjustments to the megabill last week that eliminated the House-brokered state and local tax (SALT) deduction deal.

Senate Republicans framed the move as a negotiating tactic, but key blue-state House Republicans quickly panned it as a dealbreaker and indicated they wouldn’t give an inch.

Another revision GOP senators made was the softening of cuts to green-energy subsidies that had been imposed under the Biden-era Inflation Reduction Act.

“The OBBB is now 1) increasing deficits a LOT than the House bill, 2) watering down termination of the Green New Scam to less than 50%, 3) watering down food stamp reforms, 4) taking out HSA [health care savings account] expansion, 5) gutting our (weak) effort to stop rogue judges, & 6) more… so… NOT GOOD,” fiscal hawk Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) groused on X.

Roy said he would not vote for the bill making its way through the Senate in its current form.

Several other fiscal hawks in the Senate — including Sens. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Rick Scott (R-Fla.) — have said the deficit impact of the megabill is a deal-breaker for them.

Additionally, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) has raised concerns about the Medicaid reforms in the megabill.

Republicans have a 53 to 47 seat majority in the Senate, meaning the GOP can only afford to lose three votes if there’s full attendance.
