Top 10 moments in David Wright’s illustrious Mets career

There are plenty of reasons why David Wright’s No. 5 will be retired by the Mets before Saturday’s game against the Reds. 

As the former captain and face of the franchise joins the other legends in team history with his jersey forever placed atop Citi Field, here is The Post’s ranking of the Top 10 moments in Wright’s career in Flushing: 

10. A Met for life 

Wright will become the first retired Mets jersey for a player who spent his entire career with the organization, and his tenure in Queens (from 2004-2018) was cemented when he inked an eight-year contract worth $138 million in 2012. The deal — then the richest in franchise history — kept him from reaching free agency following the 2013 season, although injuries prevented him from completing the final two years of the contract. 

9. Captain America 

The only times Wright did not play for the Mets organization came in appearances for Team USA in multiple World Baseball Classic tournaments, including a game-winning, two-run single on March 17, 2009, to lift the Americans to a win over Puerto Rico to avoid elimination and advance to the semifinals. The Virginia native also blasted a grand slam against Italy during pool play at the 2013 WBC.
