Tony Dungy shocked over Ravens firing of John Harbaugh

The Ravens’ firing of John Harbaugh sent shockwaves throughout the NFL on Tuesday, and at least one coaching legend doesn’t think it was the correct decision.

Tony Dungy took to X in the wake of the news, writing that he was floored by the move and that Baltimore has put itself in a precarious spot for one simple fact — it will be hard to find someone better than the Super Bowl-winning bench boss.

“I can’t believe what things have come to in the NFL,” the Hall of Fame coach and TV analyst wrote on the social media platform. “John Harbaugh has coached the Baltimore Ravens for 18 years. He took them to the playoffs 12 times. He won a Super Bowl for them. The last 4 years they were 10-7, 13-4, 12-5, 8-9. They made the playoffs 3 straight years and missed this year because their kicker missed the game winning FG on the last play of the season. And he was fired????”

Dungy, a Super Bowl champion head coach with the Colts, added that he was perplexed by the move. “I’m sorry but I don’t understand,” he wrote. “Good luck Baltimore in finding a better coach.”

Harbaugh, the leader of the Ravens for 18 seasons, was let go after a disappointing 8-9 record in 2025 with the team missing out on the AFC North division title — and a playoff spot — after kicker Tyler Loop missed a walk-off field goal against the Steelers in Week 18.

Harbaugh finishes his long tenure in Baltimore with a 180-113 mark and six division crowns.

NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reported that Harbaugh “lost the locker room,” which factored heavily in the decision.

The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported that a “pressure point” emerged as Harbaugh would not entertain letting go of offensive coordinator Todd Monken.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, at least seven teams have already called Harbaugh’s agent about his services.

At least for the time being, he is the hottest commodity on the coaching market.
