Titans coach Brian Callahan relinquishes play-calling duties

Titans head coach Brian Callahan has delegated play-calling duties to quarterbacks coach Bo Hardegree following a disheartening 0-3 start to the season.

Callahan detailed his decision Tuesday, explaining that the move allows him to better address the roster at large.

“I think this is one of the best things for us at the moment to help me do a better job as a head coach and be more present and available for the football team and less involved in just the day-to-day minutiae of getting ready to call a game,” Callahan told reporters. “So I think it’s going to be positive for us.”

The Titans are a dreadful 3-17 since Callahan took over in January 2024 — a brutal record punctuated by a 41-20 thumping at the hands of the Colts at home on Sunday. Tennessee has been outscored 94-51 over its three games this season.

Callahan is just the fifth coach since 2000 with three or fewer wins through their first 20 games at the helm.

With rookie quarterback — and first overall draft pick — Cam Ward leading the charge, Tennessee ranks 28th in points per game (17) and 31st in total yards per game (222.3).

Even so, Callahan defended his play-calling and confirmed the team’s offensive game plan will remain largely unchanged, with it still being a “collaborative process.”

“I’ve had zero disappointment in my play-calling,” Callahan added Tuesday. “I don’t have any disappointment in that at all. But it’s just more so I can see the rest of it — see the big picture better.”

In Hardegree, the Titans have a Tennessee native with NFL play-calling experience.

A former quarterbacks coach for the Raiders, Hardegree was promoted to interim offensive coordinator and called plays for Antonio Pierce after head coach Josh McDaniels and offensive coordinator Mick Lombardi were fired in 2023.

The Titans hit the road to take on another winless team, the Texans, on Sunday afternoon at NRG Stadium.
