The Black Sabbath rocker, who was dubbed the Prince of Darkness, died “surrounded by love” last Tuesday at age 76.
As his friends and family gear up to lay him to rest, Ozzy’s legacy has been memorialized by heartbroken fans who have covered the city’s so-called “Black Sabbath Bridge” with a slew of floral tributes.
A funeral parade honoring the “Crazy Train” hitmaker is slated for 1p.m. local time, which will see the procession go through Birmingham’s popular Broad Street.
Large crowds began to gather in the early hours of Wednesday to ensure they have the best view of the heavy metal legend’s hearse make its way through the city.
Thousands of fans were pictured securing their spots in and around the city — including on the bridge and in various pockets of the city center.
The rocker’s wife, Sharon Osbourne, will be joined by the rest of the family in cars following the hearse. The Osbournes will be accompanied by the Bostin’ Brass live brass band.
In addition to floral tributes, fans of the “War Pigs” musician have also left heartfelt notes and letters to the late rocker, which have been placed along the procession route.
Fans have also signed a book of condolences, an idea that was kickstarted by Birmingham Museum And Art Gallery in the days after Ozzy’s death.
The late rocker Black Sabbath bandmates, Terence “Geezer” Butler, Tony Iommi and Bill Ward, will attend the procession.
It’s been reported that several other stars will join in paying tribute to Ozzy, including Sir Elton John and singer Yungblud.
The procession has been organized by the Birmingham City Council. Officials worked closely with the Osbourne family, who footed the bill for the epic send-off.
“Ozzy was more than a music legend — he was a son of Birmingham,” the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Zafar Iqbal, said ahead of the funeral.
“Having recently been awarded the Freedom of the City and following his celebrated appearance at the Back to the Beginning concert at Villa Park earlier this month, it was important to the city that we support a fitting, dignified tribute ahead of a private family funeral.”
“We know how much this moment will mean to his fans. We’re proud to host it here with his loving family in the place where it all began, and we are grateful that they have generously offered to pay to enable this to happen and support the city is giving him the farewell he deserves,” Iqbal added.
The “Paranoid” hitmaker had previously made his funeral wishes clear in a Dear Ozzy column for The Times of London in 2011.
“I honestly don’t care what they play at my funeral; they can put on a medley of Justin Bieber, Susan Boyle and We Are the Diddymen if it makes ’em happy,” he revealed to the outlet. “But I do want to make sure it’s a celebration, not a mope-fest.”
Osbourne added, “I’d also like some pranks: maybe the sound of knocking inside the coffin; or a video of me asking my doctor for a second opinion on his diagnosis of ‘death.’ There’ll be no harping on the bad times.”
“So to answer your question, yes, a bit of planning is the right thing to do for the family you leave behind.”
Osbourne added that it’s “worth remembering that a lot of people see nothing but misery their whole lives. So by any measure, most of us in this country — especially rock stars like me — are very lucky.”
“That’s why I don’t want my funeral to be sad. I want it to be a time to say thanks,” he concluded.
In 2023, Ozzy said he would “die a happy man” if he could express his gratitude to loyal fans ahead of his farewell show.
Along with plans for his memorial, Osbourne previously detailed how he wanted to be remembered.
