‘The Resident’s Emily VanCamp, Morris Chestnut, And Cast Mourn Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s Death: “Beyond Heartbroken”

Fans of Malcolm-Jamal Warner and his iconic television career were heartbroken to learn of the 54-year-old actor’s tragic death on Monday, July 21. Ever since the news broke, those who watched and worked with Warner over the years — including the cast of his long-running FOX drama, The Resident — have been posting touching tributes to the actor on social media.

In one of Warner’s most beloved recent roles, he played Dr. AJ Austin (aka The Raptor) in all six seasons of The Resident on FOX. Though the medical drama was canceled ahead of Season 7, in a May 2024 interview with Decider, Warner confirmed that he and his cast-mates would all be open for a potential The Resident reunion at some point down the line.

“I think one of the best things about that show is how much we as a cast loved and still love one another. I think we would all jump at the opportunity to be able to work together again,” Warner told Decider.

In the day since news of Warner’s death broke, members of The Resident‘s cast and crew shared special memories, touching tributes, and profound sadness over the monumental loss.

Emily VanCamp, who played Nicolette Nevin in five seasons of The Resident, wrote, “I’m not sure I have the words to express what a gift it was to know you and to work with you. Your thunderous laugh, the bear hugs, our chats about love, family and life. A true family man with so much integrity and an endlessly generous spirit. You walked the walk my friend.
Sending all my love to your beautiful family and all of those who knew you and were close to you. Beyond heartbroken 💔❤️”

Morris Chestnut, who played Barrett Cain in Season 3 and Season 4 of The Resident, chimed in to share his thoughts about Warner what he brought to the series and set.

“Heartbroken to hear about the passing of Malcolm-Jamal Warner. Working alongside him on The Resident was an honor,” Chestnut wrote. “He brought so much depth, warmth, and wisdom to every scene and every conversation. One of the nicest in the business. Rest easy, brother. Your legacy lives on.”

Shaunette Renée Wilson, whose character Dr. Mina Okafor had a close mentorship and eventual romantic relationship with Warner’s Dr. Austin, penned a heartbreaking message to the late star as well.

“Last week I had the impulse to text you for one of our lengthy heart check-ins. I truly wish I had so that one of the last words I had of you were of your wisdom, kindness, and that uncanny ability you had to be both unserious and profound within a single sentence,” she wrote. “I’m beyond heartbroken. You were such a dear friend to me. My heart goes out to the family and loved ones he leaves behind. I cannot conceive the amount of grief with such a tragedy. Rest in Power, Malcolm. It was a joy to be Mina to your AJ. I will miss you deeply. 💔”

In a series of Instagram Stories, Anuja Joshi, who played Leela Devi from Season 4 to Season 6 of The Resident, wrote, “I am beyond heartbroken. I am still processing this news. All I will say is I am so grateful to have known you my friend. You were a light to so many and I’m lucky to have been one of them…I can heart your laugh echoing through this photo. I’ll cherish every memory, Raptor. I’ll miss you so much.”

Manish Dayal, who played Devon Pravesh in all six seasons of the medical drama, shared a video of Warner speaking to Instagram Stories alongside a broken heart emoji and the following message: “I wish I had the words…you always did.”

And The Resident‘s executive producers Amy Holden Jones, Todd Harthan, and Andrew Chapman shared the following group statement with Deadline: “Working with Malcolm was a joy. He was a fabulous actor and a stellar human being. He was larger than life, and brought a deep empathy and humanity to every scene. He was thoughtful, kind, and incredibly hard-working, a devoted family man with a dear wife and child. And if that weren’t enough, he made us laugh. Our condolences to all who loved him as we did. His death is a tragic loss and he will be missed.”

While The Resident‘s leading man, Matt Czuchry, isn’t currently on social media, when Warner spoke with Decider in May 2024 he confirmed that he, Czuchry, and the cast were still incredibly close.

“Matt [Czuchry] was just here last night. We were just hanging out last night. And I just saw Bruce [Greenwood] a couple of weeks ago,” Warner told Decider. “We all really, really dig each other. So I think if we had the opportunity to work together again, we would be like, ‘Yeah, man!’”

Beyond The Resident, Warner’s cast-mates from shows like 9-1-1, The Cosby Show, and more are also mourning his death. The outpouring of love and admiration is a reminder that although Warner is gone, he’s left behind an inspiring, impactful legacy and a large library of work that will continue to resonate with and move people.

The Resident and 9-1-1 are now streaming on Hulu.
