‘The Pitt’ Season 2 Episode 1 Ending Explained: What Is Going On With Dr. Al-Hashimi and the Baby?

The Pitt Season 2 Episode 1 “7 AM” introduces fans of the HBO Max medical drama to a new character, Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi (Sepideh Moafi).
Dr. Al-Hashimi — or “Dr. Al” as former colleagues Mel (Taylor Dearden) and Mohan (Supriya Ganesh) call her — is going to be subbing in for Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle) when he’s off on his three-month sabbatical. Naturally, the new doc rubs our beloved Robby the wrong way. Where he trusts his gut and makes do with what he’s got, she boosts AI and is determined to overhaul the Pitt, right down to its nickname.

Nevertheless, Dr. Al is a talented doctor who exhibits (so far) a usually unflappable demeanor. That is, until the very end of The Pitt Season 2 premiere, which might have had you scratching your head in confusion…
**Spoilers for The Pitt Season 2 Episode 1 “7 AM,” now streaming on HBO Max**
About halfway through The Pitt Season 2 premiere, an abandoned infant is discovered in the waiting room restroom. Naturally, everyone bands together to take care of the baby girl in peds, the brightly-painted hospital room where Robby coincidentally had his Season 1 breakdown.
At the very end of The Pitt Season 2 Episode 1 “7 AM,” Dr. Mohan shows Dr. Al some of the baby’s test results and the senior physician stops in what appears to be confusion or horror. Even Mohan notices Dr. Al’s strange reaction, asking her boss if she missed something. And that’s that! We don’t know what caused Dr. Al’s reaction.
When DECIDER spoke with Sepideh Moafi, she teased that Dr. Al’s odd behavior will be explained later on in the second season.
“Yeah, I think it ends on a big question mark and a big teaser of like, ‘What’s going on for her?’” Moafi said. “Yes, we will definitely learn more and and we’ll understand the context for that moment throughout the season, later on in the season.”
“But yeah, the answer to that, it’s kind of tentacled and it’s rooted in a huge spoiler,” she said.
As it turns out, Moafi’s performance at the end of Episode 1 even had her co-stars questioning what the heck was going on. Moafi was paired with fellow Pitt star Shawn Hatosy, who said, “When I saw it, I was like, ‘What? Is there something, is it connected to infant care?’ It was so beautifully done. You know, you really go, ‘What is going on?’”
Nevertheless, both actors played coy.
“Oh, it’s so exciting,” Hatosy said. “Wait till you find out.”
There are fourteen episodes left in The Pitt Season 2, so we have plenty of time between now and the April 16 finale to learn more about Dr. Al and her spoiler-y secrets.
