The Netflix Cancellation Trend Isn’t Dying Down As Elon Musk Encourages Boycott Over ‘Dead End: Paranormal Park’

Elon Musk has incited a call to “cancel Netflixon X this week, as far-right critics claim the streamer is pushing “woke” children’s programming.

According to Forbes, Musk urged people to “Cancel Netflix” while sharing a post from the account @LibsofTikTok, which featured a portion of a report from the streamer showing an increase in the “percentage of underrepresented personnel above-the-line in series by year” when it came to creators, producers, writers, and directors between 2018 and 2023. Another part of the report included in the post showed an increase in “underrepresented leads/co-leads in Netflix & industry series by year.”

The account has also taken issue with the Netflix animated series Dead End: Paranormal Park, which features a transgender character named Barney, voiced by Zach Barack, who is trans in real life, per Newsweek.

“OMG. Dead End Paranormal Park, a show on Netflix, is pushing pro-transgender on CHILDREN,” the account wrote on X on Monday (Sept. 29). “This show is advertised for 7-YEAR-OLDS It’s being promoted on @netflix kids now. Parents- BEWARE.”

Per Variety, Dead End: Paranormal Park creator Hamish Steele has since addressed the backlash on BlueSky, revealing that he has gotten “extremely nasty weird homophobic and antisemitic emails” and eventually wrote that he is be “going to basically be on the down low for the foreseeable.”

According to Newsweek, controversy surrounding the series also spurred in relation to the assassination of Charlie Kirk. The account @LibsofTikTok claimed in a post on Wednesday (Oct. 1) that “called Charlie [Kirk] a nazi and had a meltdown because people were mourning him” after he was killed.

Musk shared the post and wrote, “This is not ok,” per a screenshot on Steele’s BlueSky account.

The @LibsofTikTok account has since posted about other titles on the streamer that they claim are harmful, including Transformers: Earthspark, which they wrote promotes “the use of made-up pronouns,” Family Switch, the Jennifer Garner and Ed Helms-led comedy in which they said features a scene that is “racist against white people,” and Monster High: The Movie, which is streaming on Netflix in the UK and allegedly “pushes woke pronouns on CHILDREN and teaches they can be ‘nonbinary’.” (Monster High: The Movie is a Nickelodeon production currently streaming on Paramount+, which is controlled by the Trump-friendly nepo baby David Ellison, but curiously, none of these agitators seem too concerned about that at the moment.)

In response to Musk’s boycotting of Netflix, supporters have also canceled their subscriptions, sharing screenshots as proof. Netflix shares have fallen 3.5% to $1,162.53 as of today’s market close.

“Cancel Netflix for the health of your kids,” Musk wrote on X on Oct. 1, sharing a meme suggesting Netflix’s trojan horse is hiding a “transgender woke agenda” for children on the platform.
