‘The Great British Baking Show’: Who is Dan Blackman?

If you made sure to watch every last second of The Great British Baking Show finale, you’ll know that the 2025 season ends with a somber footnote. After revealing this year’s winner and giving us updates on all of our favorite bakers, The Great British Baking Show bids a fond farewell to a friend who has passed. The final shot of The Great British Baking Show finale is a black screen with a photo of a man and the message, “In Loving Memory of Dan Blackman, 1974 to 2025.”

This isn’t the first time The Great British Baking Show has paid tribute to one of its fallen crew members. Back in 2022, the cozy British series dedicated the Season 10 premiere to Chloe Avery. Chloe had not competed on the show, but rather worked as a food producer. It was her job to come up with the challenges and to organize everything the bakers would need to pull their creations off.

So who is Dan Blackman? Why was he important to The Great British Baking Show? And what other shows did he touch during his life? Here’s everything we know about Dan Blackman and what he meant to the incredible people who make one of our all-time favorite shows…

The Great British Baking Show: Who was Dan Blackman?

Daniel Blackman was a long-time editor for The Great British Baking Show, as well as many other iconic British comfort shows. According to Digital Spy, Blackman was born in the Cheshire area and then attended the University of West England in Bristol, where he studied History and Politics.

Blackman worked behind-the-scenes for the BBC for 13 years. During that time, he worked on non-fiction series like Planet Earth: The Future and Timeshift. In 2011, he left the BBC to go freelance.

Blackman’s IMDB page is full of just the coziest British TV titles, including Autumnwatch, Winterwatch, and Springwatch. In 2018, he began working on The Great British Baking Show (known as The Great British Bake Off overseas). He worked on editing footage from the tent for a good five years, making time to also edit episodes of Nadiya Hussain‘s Nadiya’s Everyday Baking and Changing Rooms.

Blackman eventually left The Great British Baking Show to work on another of our favorite Love Productions shows, The Great Pottery Throw Down. Based on public posts, like Julia Foot (@joolsfoot), Blackman was well-liked and respected by his peers in British broadcasting. Foot specifically described him as a “gentle, intelligent man and a really good editor.”

Dan Blackman was remembered by friends and family with both a September funeral service in the Cheshire area and a memorial held in Bristol in mid October. Blackman was 51 years old when he passed.
