‘The Cult of the Real Housewife’ Explores Allegations of Manipulation and Financial Pressure in Mary Cosby’s Church

TLC’s new docuseries The Cult of the Real Housewife turns a critical eye on Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star Mary Cosby and the church she leads with her husband, examining claims of cult-like behavior made by former members of Faith Temple Pentecostal Church.

The three-part series traces the church’s origins to Rosemary “Mama” Cosby, Mary’s grandmother, who was widely respected within the congregation. After her death, leadership passed to her husband, Robert Cosby Sr. — Mary’s step-grandfather — whose later marriage to Mary sparked controversy and, according to critics, marked a dramatic shift in church culture.

Among those featured in the docuseries is Mary’s cousin Dan Cosby, who told Fox News Digital that fear and authoritarian control became central to life inside the church.

“You were just afraid to leave. People were afraid of leaving,” Dan said. “This is detrimental to people.”

Dan alleged that abuse was often framed as spiritual guidance and said members were pressured financially and emotionally. He claimed church leaders used guilt and scripture to shame congregants into giving more money, creating what he described as an environment rooted in fear rather than faith.

The docuseries also revisits RHOSLC Season 2, when former church member Cameron appeared on the show and claimed he took out a $300,000 second mortgage on his home and gave the money to Mary — a moment that brought the church’s alleged financial practices into the public spotlight.

Dan’s wife, Kim Cosby, also appears in the series, describing the emotional toll of teachings that forced members to choose between family and faith.

“If I said I’m going to go home and cook… then I’m putting him above God,” she said, adding that obedience was framed as a constant test of loyalty.

Despite the trauma they describe, Dan said the family is beginning to heal.

“After 20 years … this year, 2025, and with the help of ‘The Cult of the Real Housewife’ … my family — Kim, my daughters, my grandchildren — I am in their lives, and we are stronger than we’ve ever been,” he said.
