Jurors deliberated his fate for less than four hours, according to the Galveston Daily News.
In court, prosecutors argued Urick and his girlfriend Tara Lynn King, 17, began plotting her grandma’s murder weeks before.
The two planned to kidnap and then kill Tammy King after stealing $5,400 in cash, prescription pills, antique coins and guns from her home safe, text and Instagram messages shared in court showed.
Before the killings, the couple sold their friends sob stories about the grandmother’s alleged physical abuse and drug use, the Galveston Daily News reported.
Witnesses testified in court the couple bragged about having money.
One even said Urick told them he “couldn’t get the smell of burning flesh out of his nose.”
In other messages, the two spoke of “the start of the rest of their lives” and planned to “Kill her at 4” with ammunition that would “shred through skin.”
Bill Agnew, Urick’s defense attorney, argued the crime was not premeditated. He also claimed the state failed to prove the robbery was a motive for the murder.
There is no start date yet for Tara King’s impending capital murder trial.
