The November 2025 movie — which is based on the life of trailblazing boxer Christy Martin — was a box office flop on opening weekend, making around $1.3 million in the United States. The film then suffered one of the worst second-weekend drops ever, leading to its removal from many theaters across the country.
However, Sweeney and the rest of the “Christy” cast and crew received a standing ovation at its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September. And although the reviews were mixed, Sweeney was generally praised for her transformative performance.
Sweeney — who has been embroiled in controversy this year — previously dismissed the negative box office results, writing in part on Instagram that we “don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact.”
She also called “Christy” the “most impactful project” of her life.
In July, the actress, 28, made headlines after internet users claimed her American Eagle denim campaign promoted eugenics and “Nazi propaganda” by using a play on the words “genes” and “jeans.”
In one of the ads, Sweeney — who has blue eyes and blond hair — talked about how genes that are passed from parent to offspring often determine traits such as “hair color, personality and even eye color.”
She ended the video by looking at the camera and saying, “My jeans are blue.”
Sweeney — who has been registered with the Republican Party of Florida in Monroe County since June 2024 — initially dodged questions about the questionable campaign.
She eventually brushed off the criticism by telling GQ, “I did a jean ad. I mean, the reaction definitely was a surprise, but I love jeans. All I wear are jeans. I’m literally in jeans and a T-shirt every day of my life.”
However, she recently addressed the scandal head-on, insisting to People, “I don’t support the views some people chose to connect to the campaign. Many have assigned motives and labels to me that just aren’t true.”
She elaborated, “I’m against hate and divisiveness. In the past, my stance has been to never respond to negative or positive press, but recently, I have come to realize that my silence regarding this issue has only widened the divide, not closed it.”
Another major snub from the 2026 Golden Globes was “Wicked: For Good” not receiving a nomination in the best musical or comedy category. However, the film’s two biggest stars did receive recognition.
Cynthia Erivo was nominated for best performance by an actress in a motion picture musical or comedy, while Ariana Grande is up for best supporting actress in any motion picture.
