Thailand takes its crack at the time loop movie genre with the new Netflix Original romantic comedy-drama, Same Day With Someone. The movie stars Jarinporn Joonkiat as an upper-crust and slightly out-of-touch young museum curator who is forced to relive her worst day ever until she can change for the better. There are plenty of your classic time loop rom-com tropes, plus fresh twists and quirks that should keep viewers engaged and guessing. Is this movie unique and enjoyable enough to warrant going out of your way for, or is it fated to flop? Keep reading to find out!
The Gist: From a young age, the privileged and put-together Mesa Worathepanant (Jarinporn Joonkiat) knew what she wanted to do with her life. The first time she ever stepped onto the run-down property of her great-grandfather’s sprawling mansion, she planned to eventually study curatorial management abroad so she could turn the old property into a successful museum. That very day, she prayed to the Red Ribbon Goddess (Metinee Kingpayome) at a nearby shrine, asking for two things: to turn the family land into a successful museum, and to one day get married to a kind-hearted man.

Years later, it seems like Mesa is on the brink of all her greatest wishes coming true. Not only is the Worathepanant Museum Bangkok now a beautiful and successful gallery, but she’s also engaged to a handsome pilot, Tul (Trisanu Soranun), who she’s set to marry in a mere month. Although most of her staff initially viewed her as a spoiled and naive nepo baby who was handed her museum curator job due to her familial legacy, Mesa genuinely loves what she does and has worked hard to earn her position. On the brink of opening up her very own exhibit showcasing the nation of Chinlin’s priceless 800+ year-old artifact, the Sirsila Stone, Mesa has won the respect of her colleagues, including her boss, Ben (Warintorn Panhakarn), who has quietly loved and supported Mesa from afar, accepting his place in her life as a dear and supportive friend.
However, everything suddenly changes for Mesa when one of the most exciting days of her career turns into the worst day of her life. On August 8, 2025, Mesa opens up the Chinlin exhibit and presents the artifact to the nation’s ambassador (Jaturong Phonboon) to help secure her father’s good business relationship with his people. If all goes well, she’s riding high going into the next day as the new top dog, as Ben leaves his well-run museum to take a two-year study leave in France. It’s the perfect day… until a family of French tourists causes a ruckus that leads to the Sirsila Stone (and by extension, Mesa’s father AND all of Thailand’s good relationship with Chinlin) being broken beyond repair.
To add insult to injury, Tul enters the ruined exhibit just to cruelly randomly dump Mesa in front of her employees. The ever-smiling Mesa ends the night drinking with Ben, finally breaking down enough that she tearfully knocks over (and, unfortunately, throws up on) the Red Ribbon Goddess’s shrine statue, inadvertently thrusting herself into a temporal loop. As Mesa relives her terrible day again and again, she comes to realize that fate may not be set in stone, and that there are people at her side like Ben, her mom (Siriam Pakdeedumrongrit), and her employee Ning (Charlette Wasita Hermenau), whom she has been too self-involved to truly see and appreciate as they are. Can Mesa’s worst day ever turn into the best thing that ever happened to her, or is she destined to make the same mistakes for eternity?
What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: You will, of course, be reminded of other time loop rom-coms like Groundhog Day and Palm Springs. Same Day With Someone may also share some similarities and themes with other Thai films on Netflix, like Friendzone and Love Live Love!.
Performance Worth Watching: Jarinporn Joonkiat skillfully leads the movie as Mesa. Her consistent commitment, expressiveness, and charm infuse depth into Mesa, culminating in a versatile performance that makes the character equally capable of pulling genuine laughter or tears from us viewers.
Memorable Dialogue: I couldn’t help but be tickled by Mesa’s drunken ramblings to the poor Red Ribbon Goddess statue: “I will not puke on you again, Goddess!” How nice of her.
Sex and Skin: None really, just a few implications of PG-13 activities and themes.
Our Take: Bolstered by the excellent chemistry of its leads and the strong performances from all of its actors, Same Day With Someone pulls you in with its goofiness and intrigue, but makes you stay for its heartfelt humanity. The time loop trope has been done before, and while this movie doesn’t exactly reinvent the wheel, it does honor the genre by taking the time to set out the specific world before playing with it so that there are plenty of satisfying and amusing pay-offs throughout the story.
Even when Mesa is out of touch or when Ben is painfully down-bad or when Tul is being despicable, you can’t help but love (or at least feel entertained by) the characters for all their faults, thanks to the ardent acting from the entire cast. Despite the movie’s supernatural storyline and the many outlandish gags, Same Day With Someone still manages to feel relatable and moving due to its inherent heart, earnestness, and humanity.
Sure, the tonal shifts from goofy to serious are sometimes jarring (especially as the movie starts silly before morphing into something surprisingly heavy and real), but at its core, the cleverness and commitment of the writing and actors keep the film feeling ultimately accessible and affecting.
Our Call: Same Day With Someone may not set the standard of time loop movies the way that Groundhog Day once did or completely break the mold like Palm Springs, but what it does accomplish is a warm, engaging, and well-acted movie with heart and a message. It’s not perfect, it’s not Earth-shattering, but it’s sweet and entertaining, which is more than enough to make it a movie worth watching. STREAM IT!!
