‘SNL’ alums Heidi Gardner, Ego Nwodim get emotional over ‘challenging’ on-set dynamic after their exits



“Saturday Night Live” alums Heidi Gardner and Ego Nwodim got emotional over their “challenging” on-set dynamic at the NBC show after their shocking exits.

“To have to share such an intimate space together for hours on end on Saturdays and Thursdays and Fridays, whenever we were rehearsing, yeah, it made us close quick,” Nwodim explained on her “Thanks Dad” podcast Tuesday.

“But it doesn’t have to work that way. It could also not make you close. It can make you not like each other. It can make you feel whatever mutually, ‘I’m sharing a space with this person.’ But I’m so grateful we got so close,” she added.

Gardner, 42, said that though she was “honored” to work at “SNL,” there “weren’t a lot of times [they] were able to succeed the way [they] wanted at the exact same time.”

Nwodim mentioned that the sketch comedy show was “not the easiest place to work”, but Gardner was “such a light in what can be such a challenging place.”

“The sketches, they come, they go, they’re really fun. They can be hard, they can be things you’re not into, whatever,” the “Players” actress, 37, said.

“But I’m like, if you can leave — in a place where it can get so competitive and you can become so self involved, if you can leave and be still remarkably lovely and such a light and still pouring into other people like you, I think you succeeded.”

Page Six has reached out to “SNL” for comment but did not immediately hear back.

Several comedians announced their exits from the NBC show ahead of its 51st season.

Meanwhile, Nwodim announced she was leaving “SNL” last month.

“The hardest part of a great party is knowing when to say goodnight,” the comedian wrote on Instagram. “But after seven unforgettable seasons, I have decided to leave ‘SNL.’ I am immensely grateful to Lorne [Michaels] for the opportunity, to my castmates, the writers, and the crew for their brilliance, support, and friendship.

Nwodim said being on the “SNL” stage “taught [her] more than [she] could have ever imagined.”

“I will carry those memories (and that laughter) with me always,” she added. “Now invite me to your weddings please!!!”
