A flood watch is in effect for the city the surrounding area starting at 2 p.m. and lasting until at least 2 a.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.
Severe thunderstorms could bring winds of up to 58 mph and dump at least a couple of inches of rain per hour, the agency said.
The storm warning comes as the city is already caught in the middle of a heat advisory, with temperatures in the mid-90s.
“The greatest risk is going to be later tonight,” said Fox Weather meteorologist Stephanie van Oppen.
“The flood watch goes through 2 a.m. for the city and that’s likely going to be for thunderstorms that happen during the afternoon hours and definitely be a concern for the evening commute today.”
A cold front approaching from the east will provide “enough juice” to cause problems, she said.
While the entire Interstate-95 corridor is under a flood watch, not every part of the region will face the storm’s wrath.
However, van Oppen cautioned, “Any storms that do develop could produce flash flooding.”
The rain will persist through at least Friday, but won’t be nearly as severe as what the city could face Tuesday, she said.
“There is a chance that things clear out for the weekend, but we are in a pattern of hot and humid conditions that could produce afternoon thunderstorms the rest of the week,” van Oppen said.
Mayor Eric Adams, meanwhile, warned of the rising mercury earlier Tuesday.
“This is some serious heat and we should take it into precaution and preparation,” Mayor Eric Adams said at a briefing Tuesday morning.
