Sheinelle Jones Opens Up To Jenna Bush Hager About Returning To Work After Her Husband’s Death: “It’s Actually So Hard”
Sheinelle Jones opened up about her grief in a candid conversation with Jenna Bush Hager on Today to kick off her week as guest host.
Jones recently returned to The Today Show after taking some time away from work to take care of her husband Uche Ojeh, who passed away in May at the age of 45 after a battle with brain cancer. She was welcomed back onto the show with open arms Sept. 5 and has been back on the air since. Now, she is also guest hosting Today With Jenna & Friends this week.

Jones was rather candid about the difficulty she had returning to a “new normal” with her kids after her husband’s death.
“I think the first week was hard for me,” she admitted. She explained to Bush Hager that, when she and her kids returned to work and school, they no longer had to “rally” to prepare for the next major event.
“Up until the first week, it was, ‘Okay, my husband’s sick but we’re gonna find the best doctors we’re gonna do the best we can,’” she recounted to Bush Hager. “Then it was, ‘Okay, thing’s aren’t going well, we’re going to hospice, we’re gonna give him the best days and we’re gonna do the best things we can.’” Jones added that she approached planning his funeral similarly, sayin she wanted to “give him the best send off.”
But, she added that the Saturday morning after her first week back at work “was tough.”
“Saturday’s like when we look at each other and we go, ‘Oh my god, what a week,’” she said of her and her husband. “My coach was gone, my life partner. The days after my first week were tough because it was like my new normal.”
Jones added that, while many were excited to see her guest host Today With Jenna & Friends, she had an admittedly very different reaction. “I don’t know if excited is the word because it’s actually so hard,” she confessed.
Bush Hager later could not hold back her tears as she praised Jones for the way she’s handled this.
“I’ve never met anybody stronger,” she told Jones. “Watching you over the last year has been remarkable.”
Bush Hager continued through her tears, “When you just said, ‘I want to give him the best send off,’ I remember sitting at his funeral thinking – and I’ve been to state funerals and such – there’s never been a more beautiful funeral and you did all that.”
