Carrie walked through a New York City park while wearing a gingham-print, bonnet-style hat designed by Maryam Keyhani. Many viewers compared the look to Strawberry Shortcake.
Parker revealed just how the piece came to be during a Q&A with Evan Ross Katz, hosted by Threads on August 11.
The “Hocus Pocus” actress recalled immediately spotting the hat during a fitting. It was placed among “racks and racks and racks” of clothes and “miles of shoes.”
“I personally love hats on Carrie. I love it,” Parker gushed. “So the minute I saw that hat, I’m sure I said something similar to, ‘How do I get that on my head? How do we convince Michael Patrick [King] it’s necessary? And what scene can it go in that we can make a case in front of the court and we can say, ‘No, Michael Patrick, this is not going to be distracting, this is going to be great?’”
The “Sex and the City” alum added that the hat was “massive and shapeless” and that milliners don’t normally work with linen since it’s considered “an enemy of shape and form.”
“I loved it. I loved it,” Parker stated. “So I was just like, ‘We’ve got to find a place for this.’”
Meanwhile, the HBO vet told Katz that she “never thought twice” about the viewer’s reaction.
“My hand to whatever, this is an honorable answer. And I’ll tell you that I was like, ‘This is going to be fun or interesting,’” she said.
Series creator Michael Patrick King teased to Glamour in May that the accessory was like “the Hindenburg balloon that landed on [Carrie’s] head.”
He added, “It is amazing.”
Parker confessed to the outlet that she never imagined the cloud hat would become a whole “thing.”
“[Carrie’s] walking through Washington Square Park eating ice cream in an Ossie Clark dress and Dr. Scholl’s … and it didn’t seem that it would intrude in any way on the scene or even in fact be a thing,” she went on. “You could have told me that hat was three by four. I would’ve felt the same.”
A month later, Parker told USA Today that she “really worn [King] down.”
“His eyes have adapted to large-scale things on heads now, so he’s pretty generous about how often they can appear,” she confessed.
But King, 70, always knew the hat was destined for chatter.
“It’ll be a thing. People will wear it at Halloween,” he told USA Today. “It makes people say, ‘I love it. I hate it. Oh, my God, what was she thinking?’”
The “Sex and the City” spinoff concluded its run after three seasons on Aug. 14.
The series debuted in 2021 and saw Carrie, Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte (Kristin Davis) return, among a slew of new faces. Kim Cattrall opted not to reprise the iconic role of Samantha.
King insisted the show wasn’t canceled but that he felt this was a good spot for the story to end.
“And just like that… the ongoing storytelling of the’ Sex And The City’ universe is coming to an end,” he said on X earlier this month.
“While I was writing the last episode of ‘And Just Like That…’ season 3, it became clear to me that this might be a wonderful place to stop.”
Parker, meanwhile, took to Instagram to share a heartfelt goodbye to Carrie, whom she has portrayed since 1998.
“Carrie Bradshaw has dominated my professional heartbeat for 27 years. I think I have loved her most of all,” Parker penned. “She Crossed Streets Avenues Rubicons, so it seemed. She Broke hearts Heels Habits. She Loved Lost Won Tripped Leaped Fell short and into puddles Aged Got wiser.”
“[She made] the hardest, worst and best decisions, Traveled near and far For the new The vintage Friends and love. Changed homes, time zones, boyfriends, her mind, her shoes, her hair, but never her love and devotion to New York City. She had Dates Drinks Boyfriends A husband and truly great loves and romances,” she mused.
“AJLT was all joy, adventure, the greatest kind of hard work alongside the most extraordinary talent of 380 that includes all the brilliant actors who joined us. I am better for every single day I spent with you.”
Two months prior to the series ending, Parker revealed she was shocked to learn about the negative online chatter surrounding the show. In particular, she was unaware that audience members disliked Sara Ramirez’s character Che Diaz.
“A friend of mine brought it up to me, and it’s like: ‘What are you talking about?’” Parker said in an interview with The Guardian. “And he said: ‘Yeah, there’s all this conversation.’”
Ramirez, 49, originated the character in 2021 during season one before becoming Miranda’s love interest in season two. They left the show after the second season wrapped.
Parker expressed to the outlet that she doesn’t listen to backlash against projects she stars in.
She stated, “I’ve been an actor for 50 years, and I’ve almost never paid attention to peripheral chatter.”
