Sabrina Carpenter wears Bob Mackie dress originally worn by Cher to VMAs 2025 afterparty
Sabrina Carpenter was the star of the show—and the after party—in the colorful Bob Mackie dress she wore to her Studio54-themed post-VMAs 2025 celebration on Sunday.
The pop star, 26, paid homage to the iconic singer, Cher, as she stepped out in the vintage costume originally worn by the “Believe” singer on the “Cher Show” in 1975.

Cher, now 79, first wore the elaborate costume when she performed a duet of “Shame Shame Shame” with Tina Turner, with the sensational singers rocking matching dresses.
Carpenter styled the reflective, pink, black, and turquoise dress with voluminous curly hair, silver platform pumps, and a full glam makeup look, including baby doll eyelashes.
Earlier in the night, the “Espresso” hitmaker wore “The Swamp Dress” from Mackie’s 1986 Spring collection on the red carpet as she flaunted her three MTV Moonman trophies that she won during the awards show, including album of the year.
Mackie gave a shoutout to the musician on Instagram for wearing his pieces and detailed the gorgeous dress she stepped out in first.
“The fully embellished cocktail dress is multicolor sequin and navy bugle beaded on black silk with an asymmetric fringe hem,” he shared.
The legendary designer is known for his bedazzled showgirl pieces that dominated the ’70s and ’80s, so given her trend of thematic dressing, it’s no surprise that Carpenter chose his looks for the show.
Recently, the “Manchild” singer was confirmed to be featured on Taylor Swift’s new album, “The Life of a Showgirl.” On the album cover, Swift wears one of Mackie’s bedazzled costumes from the famous Sin City spectacular “Jubilee!”
Carpenter’s new album, “Man’s Best Friend,” is inspired by the fashion and music aesthetic of the ’70s and ’80s, with many fans comparing the tracks to those by hitmakers like ABBA and Madonna. The glittery ensembles she wore to the VMAs were very much representative of those artists and decades’ styles.
The former Disney star also channeled Britney Spears during her performance of her new single, “Tears,” when she wore a glittering bra similar to one worn by the pop princess in the early aughts. Spears’ iconic look was designed by Mackie as well.
Similar to Spears’ performance during her 2001 Dream Within a Dream Tour, Carpenter also danced while getting drenched in water on stage.
As far as stylish tributes go, we have just one word: Tears.
