Ryan Routh, repping himself in attempted Trump assassination trial, files bonkers witness list
The whackjob on trial for allegedly plotting to kill President Trump rolled out a list of witnesses he wanted to call to the stand, including the commander in chief himself, activist Mahmoud Khalil and a Secret Service agent he claims asked him to “spank/slap ass.”
Ryan Routh, the wannabe assassin charged with trying to gun down Trump on his Florida golf course last year, filed the unhinged list of 24 witnesses on Sept. 2, calling Trump an “insecure ego idiot-mad fool.”

Routh is representing himself at his federal trial, which got under way with jury selection this week in Fort Pierce, Florida, despite having no formal legal training.
Judge Aileen Cannon has ruled that most of his list would not be allowed to testify,
Routh — who has been in a Fort Pierce, Florida, courthouse this week for jury selection — filed a bizarre witness list last week of 24 people he wanted to call to the witness stand, most of whom Judge Aileen Cannon has already ruled wouldn’t be allowed to testify.
The 59-year-old nut sought to question the Secret Service agent who spotted him in the bushes of Trump International West Palm Beach golf course with a SKS assault rifle on Sept. 15. The agent opened fire, prompting Routh to flee before he had a chance to shoot the then-Republican presidential nominee.
Routh nonsensically wrote on the typo-laden witness list beside the agent’s initials, R.F. — “At fence fired shots … wanted me to spank/slap ass and I — refused; I will not spank, choke or pull hair-NO.”
The accused wannabe assassin also listed as potential witnesses Palestinian activists, professors and experts, including lightning rod Columbia University pro-Palestinian protester Khalil.
He also included on the list Yale professor Jason Stanley who wrote a book about fascism and his own son Oran Routh — who was arrested shortly after his dad on child pornography charges.
During a hearing last week, Cannon denied Routh’s bid to call most of his potential witnesses on the grounds it was “untimely and insufficient,” the New York Times reported. But the judge said she would allow a handful of friends and family members to testify on Routh’s behalf.
Prosecutors plan to call a slew of law enforcement agents from the FBI, the Secret Service, and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, according to their side’s witness list.
Wednesday marked the third day of jury selection and opening statements are slated for Thursday. The trial is expected to last roughly three weeks.
While Cannon has warned Routh he’ll be on a short leash and must follow the rules of the court, jurors could be in for a wild trial if Routh’s behavior to date is any indication of the types of outlandish questions or things he might say.
On Monday, Cannon blocked Routh from trying to ask jurors unusual and “irrelevant” questions including their stance on the US taking over Greenland, pro-Palestinian student activism and how they would respond if a turtle crossed the road while they were driving.
Since firing his legal team earlier this summer, Routh has regularly filed hair-brained court papers including asking why his case wasn’t eligible for the death penalty, asking to be traded in a prisoner exchange with Hamas, Iran, China or Russia, and challenging the commander in chief to a game of golf to the death.
Routh proposed if he lost the game, he should be executed and if Trump lost, Routh should “get his job.”
Routh, who has been locked up since his arrest, pleaded not guilty to five charges connected to the alleged assassination plot. He faces up to life in prison if convicted.
