Russell Wilson delivers short but effective Giants preseason debut

BUFFALO — Russell Wilson got straight to the point.

Making his Giants debut, Wilson engineered a 12-play, 30-yard drive for a field goal to start the game Saturday against the Bills. Wilson completed 6 of 7 passes for 28 yards, utilizing mostly his tight ends and running backs on short routes.

Wilson’s limited workload ended after the one series, and he was replaced by rookie Jaxson Dart. Points were hard to come by on opening drives for the Giants last season, no matter whether Daniel Jones, Tommy DeVito or Drew Lock was under center.

It was an interesting choice by head coach Brian Daboll to start Wilson when three of his top four receivers — Malik Nabers, Darius Slayton and Jalin Hyatt — did not make the trip.

The offensive line looked like it has for most of training camp: James Hudson, Jon Runyan Jr., John Michael Schmitz, Greg Van Roten and Jermaine Eluemunor, from left to right.

Left tackle Andrew Thomas remains on the Physically Unable to Perform list, while right guard Evan Neal — who badly needs preseason game reps after a position change — missed the game due to an injury that popped up Wednesday.

Hudson committed two penalties on back-to-back plays to stall the drive after crossing midfield.

Wan’Dale Robinson had an 11-yard catch on an outside comeback route — something not seen in his repertoire much over the last three seasons. Tyrone Tracy Jr. touched the ball on each of the first four plays, including a fourth-and-1 on the ground.
