Rory McIlroy takes jab at Bryson DeChambeau before Ryder Cup

Rory McIlroy might’ve started the trash-talking for the 2025 Ryder Cup two years ago when — in the immediate aftermath of Team Europe’s Rome win — he said, “one of the biggest accomplishments in golf right now is winning an away Ryder Cup, and that’s what we’re going to do at Bethpage.”

And he hasn’t lost any of that chirping fuel in the lead-up to the showdown at Bethpage Black next weekend.

This time, McIlroy took a jab at rival Bryson DeChambeau, who earlier in the summer said that he was looking forward to talking trash to McIlroy.

“I think the only way he gets attention is by mentioning other people,” McIlroy told the Guardian in an interview published Saturday. “That is basically what I think of that. To get attention he will mention me or Scottie [Scheffler] or others.”

The McIlroy-DeChambeau feud intensified at the Masters in April — when McIlroy secured the elusive career Grand Slam — as they were paired together for the final round and DeChambeau claimed afterward that McIlroy didn’t talk to him once.

When asked about DeChambeau’s comments ahead of the PGA Championship, McIlroy replied that he was focused and that “I’m not going to try and be his best mate out there.”

DeChambeau, who joined LIV Golf, also defeated McIlroy — a staunch PGA Tour supporter — by a stroke in the 2024 U.S. Open, with McIlroy losing a one-shot lead on the 16th hole by missing a putt that was less than three feet away from the hole.

And their rivalry will now get another chapter during what’s expected to be a raucous weekend in Farmingdale, with an estimated 50,000 fans expected per day at the course.

Former Team Europe golfer Andrew Coltart warned the current roster’s wives and girlfriends that “it might not be a great idea to go out there and they can watch it from a room where it’s safe and secure.”

“Now I know that’s not what they want, they’ll want to be there with their man or their son to give them support,” Coltart told The Sun. “But it potentially can be an atmosphere they will never ever be used to and it could be quite upsetting and challenging for them. As a player you deal with these things, but nobody wants their wife or partner to be abused and there’s no way the crowd control and the stewards are going to be able to stop that.”

Team USA lost, 16 ½-11 ½, during the 2023 edition of the tournament, and while Team Europe will essentially return the same roster — and captain — from that year, American captain Keegan Bradley will have four rookies on his team.

Let’s be honest—no matter how stressful the day gets, a good viral video can instantly lift your mood. Whether it’s a funny pet doing something silly, a heartwarming moment between strangers, or a wild dance challenge, viral videos are what keep the internet fun and alive.
