McIlroy was seen blowing kisses to the crowd before he teed off on the first hole at Bethpage Black after he was greeted by chants of “F–k You, Rory!”

The Northern Irishman has been the focal point of the rivalry for American fans who jeered  McIlroy throughout the day and leading him to give the middle finger to fans as he was walking away from the green on the 11th hole on Saturday.

It’s been evident by McIlroy’s reaction on the course throughout the tournament what the Ryder Cup means to him.

He helped dominate the morning foursomes with Tommy Fleetwood on Friday, taking down Collin Morikawa and Harris, 5&4, and then paired with Shane Lowry for the afternoon four-balls session.

In that match, the European pairing tied with Sam Burns and Patrick Cantlay after McIlroy missed an important putt on the 18th hole.

“Rory’s talked about what the Ryder Cup means and the disappointments we saw in Wisconsin and how much he relishes Ryder Cups and the opportunity to try and be a part of them and hopefully be on winning teams. He’s made it quite clear that one of his big goals was to win an away Ryder Cup again,” European captain Luke Donald said after Friday’s play wrapped up.

McIlroy was paired with Fleetwood again for the start of the second day and the two jumped to a 2-up lead over Harris English and Collin Morikawa after initially falling behind after the first hole.

At one point, McIlroy sank a lengthy putt on the fifth hole, pumped his fist and looked at the crowd.
