Remembering Robert Redford and more: Letters

RIP, Sundance Kid

With the recent passing of Robert Redford, Butch and the Sundance Kid are at last reunited in that eternal rodeo in the sky (“Redford dead at 89,” Sept. 17).

Farewell, hail-fellows — see you again at the last round-up!

Adams’ mare ban

Why is Mayor Adams calling for a carriage horse ban now? It’s clearly a ploy to win some voters who are never going to vote for him anyway (“ ‘Mare’ Adams: Neigh,” Sept. 18).

Please don’t fall for it. It didn’t work for Bill de Blasio on his way in and it won’t work for Adams on his way out.

Cancel Kirk-haters

Former Washington Post columnist Karen Attiah was supposedly fired for anti-Charlie Kirk statements she made on Bluesky after Kirk was gunned down at an event in Utah (“Kirk posts did me in: ex-scribe,” Sept. 16).

Attiah’s claim: “As a columnist, I used my voice to defend freedom and democracy, challenge power and reflect on culture and politics with honesty and conviction. Now, I am the one being silenced — for doing my job.”

Well, that’s all fine and dandy — but, as I recall, it was those on the left who, for a number of years, made it their job to silence anyone and everyone who openly disagreed with their positions.

Back then, it was called “cancel culture,” but it was in many ways exactly what is happening to anyone openly disparaging Charlie Kirk today. How does it feel now that the shoe is on the other foot?

I think it’s a fair game. So, Attiah, if the shoe fits, wear it.

Pomps for Trump

The British government and royal family members prostituted themselves by allowing President Trump’s unprecedented second state visit to their country (“Trump fete fit for a king,” Sept. 18).

Disgusting. By attempting to ingratiate themselves with a narcissistic sociopath like Trump, Britain can no longer take the moral lead in world affairs. Did Trump quietly use his visit to meet up with Prince Andrew? Both were dear friends of Jeffrey Epstein and no doubt have a great deal of catching up to do.

Manchin’s flip-flop

When someone is doing an about-face on Democrats, why is there always a new book involved (“Manchin rooting for GOP,” Sept. 16)?

Former Sen. Joe Manchin had many opportunities to stop dumb Democratic legislation, like the disastrous $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan Act. He called Joe Biden out in private, yet he caved when it came time to vote on the issue.

This, along with other revelations he outlines in his book — including his desire for the GOP to win control of the Senate in 2024 — are nothing more than cash grabs that say, “I screwed up. I knew it was wrong, but voted for it anyway.”

Take Vlad on next

Bully for you, President Trump, for taking out a Venezuelan motorboat with three alleged narco-terrorists aboard (“ ‘Drug boat’ hit,” Sept. 16).

Now, when are you going to really demonstrate some guts and integrity and take on an international bully like Vladimir Putin, the man who started the Ukrainian conflagration and prolongs that democratic nation’s agony to this very day?
