Red Wings’ Patrick Kane becomes second US-born player to join 500 goal club
Patrick Kane entered the history books on Thursday night.
Kane, who is currently in his 19th NHL season, notched his 500th goal during the Red Wings’ 5-1 win over the Canucks, becoming the 50th player to do so in the league’s history.

The Buffalo, N.Y. native reached the milestone on an empty-net goal with 3:53 left in the match, and was one of two goals that Kane had on the night.
Kane’s goal also gave the 37-year-old his 1,369th point, placing him just six behind Hall of Fame center Mike Modano (1,374) for the most points by a United States-born player.

As a member of the Blackhawks, Kane became the first American to win the Hart Memorial Trophy following the 2015-16 season, along with earning the Art Ross Trophy that same year as the NHL’s scoring leader.
A three-time Stanley Cup champion, Kane is likely a future first-ballot Hockey Hall of Fame inductee once he retires, which Kane does not plan to do very soon.

“I still love the game,” Kane said back in April 2025 at the end of last season. “It’s my life. It’s what I want to do, what I think about every day. Whether it’s how I take care of my body, how I take care of myself, what I want to do this summer, how I want to train and what I want to look like on the ice next year.
“The game-to-game preparation, I love all that stuff and I’m not thinking about stopping anytime soon.”
Kane is currently in his third season with the Red Wings, after spending the majority of his NHL career with the Blackhawks — who drafted him with the No. 1 pick in 2007 — and a brief stint with the Rangers during the 2022-23 season, playing 19 games in New York after being traded by Detroit.
