Williams, 24, made it clear to the Rams that he wanted a new contract this offseason but also assured the team that he would not miss training camp.
“I want to play for the Rams,” Williams said in July. “That’s who I want to be with. That’s who I want to stay with. I know it will work out.”
The Rams drafted Williams out of Notre Dame in the fifth round in 2022.
With him being chosen that late in the draft, he was not expected to be an early contributor. But that changed in 2023 when starting running back Cam Akers was vastly underperforming. So the Rams shipped him off to the running back-needy Vikings, giving Williams the lead role.
Williams took the reins and rushed for 1,144 yards and 12 touchdowns and led the Rams to a playoff berth that season. In 2024, he continued to thrive with 1,299 yards and 14 touchdowns.
The way these contract negotiations played out has stood in contrast to what is happening in Buffalo.
Bills running back James Cook sat out of practice on Sunday for “business” reasons after he was a full participant during training camp.
The two sides have not been “that far apart,” according to the NFL Network, as Cook hopes to be the next running back to get paid.
