“After a lot of prayer, reflection, and conversations with those I trust, I’ve made the difficult decision to officially withdraw from BYU and step away from the BYU Football program,” Retzlaff posted to Instagram on Friday.

“BYU has meant more to me than just football,” Retzlaff added. “It’s been a place of growth — spiritually, mentally and physically. I’m grateful for every teammate, staff member and fan who’s supported me along the way. The relationships I’ve made in Provo will always be part of me.”

Retzlaff’s suspension materialized in the wake of a lawsuit that alleged Retzlaff raped, strangled and bit a woman during a November 2023 incident at his Provo, Utah home.

The lawsuit was dismissed on June 30, with the two sides filing a joint motion for dismissal, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

In court, Retzlaff admitted to having had premarital sex, which is in violation of BYU’s honor code.

On Friday, BYU released a statement that said: “We are grateful for the time Jake Retzlaff has spent at BYU. As he moves forward, BYU Athletics understands and respects Jake’s decision to withdraw from BYU, and we wish him all the best as he enters the next phase of his career.”

Retzlaff led the Cougars to an 11-2 season in 2024, throwing for 2,947 yards and 20 touchdowns.

“I’m excited to turn the page and embrace this next chapter,” Retzlaff said. “My journey is far from over — and I’m more motivated than ever to keep chasing my dreams.”
