The shooting took place in Oklahoma City’s Scissortail Park, causing a non-life threatening injury to the teenager.
Penn fled the scene after the altercation, and police searched the area immediately following the incident but could not identify a suspect.
Two days later, police pulled over Penn’s vehicle for a traffic stop near the Thunder’s Paycom Center just before 11 p.m., and arrested him for unlawful possession of a firearm.
When the gun, a Glock 43X 9mm pistol, was entered into the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network, the authorities realized it was the same weapon used in the June 22 shooting.
The authorities executed a search warrant at Penn’s Midwest City, Okla. home on Aug. 4, and took him into custody after what they called a “lengthy investigation.”
After the shooting took place, police found the 14-year-old boy on the ground with a gunshot wound in his leg, according to court documents obtained by KOCO 5 News.
When he arrived at the hospital, the victim then told the authorities that he did not know why he was shot or who shot him, according to the court documents.
In an interview with police, Penn confessed to the shooting and said he had been helping his cousin, who was being assaulted by other people and outnumbered, according to court documents.
Penn added that his cousin was being pursued, so he fired into the group of people coming at them.
According to data from Penn’s phone that was obtained, he was in the area of the shooting during Game 7.
