New York Sirens to play historic first game at Madison Square Garden

The World’s Most Famous Arena will welcome the world’s best women’s hockey league.

The New York Sirens of the Professional Women’s Hockey League will host a home game at Madison Square Garden on April 4, the team announced Thursday.

The Saturday night game against the Seattle Torrent will mark the PWHL’s historic first game at MSG.

“Playing at the Garden is an honor and sharing it with our dedicated fans will make it even more special,” Sirens general manager Pascal Daoust said in a statement.

“This is one of those nights meant to be experienced together, in the building, as part of the history of our team, our league, and everyone who helps bring it to life.”

The Sirens, in Year 3 of play, have settled into playing their home games at Newark’s Prudential Center after initially dividing time between Long Island and Connecticut. (The NHL’s Devils are booked for a home game on April 4.)

But the PWHL has made a point of pushing its product into new venues and new markets — with record-setting attendances routinely following. 

This season, the league expanded to eight teams, adding Seattle and Vancouver.

The Sirens played a game last month in Dallas, and are scheduled to play later this season in Washington DC, Denver, Chicago and Detroit, all cities without a PWHL franchise. 

The Garden previously hosted a professional women’s hockey game in Feb. 2021 as part of a barnstorming tour by the Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association, a precursor to the establishment of the PWHL. That game was played without fans in attendance. 

The Sirens, winners of four in a row, have pushed up to second place in the PWHL standings after a pair of last-place finishes.

No. 1 pick Kristýna Kaltounková leads the team with seven goals in 11 games.
