New ‘Golden Bachelor’ Mel Owens Catches Fury After Saying He’s “Cutting” Women “60 Or Over” (P.S. He’s 66 Years Old)
Age is but a number… or is it?
Mel Owens, who was named as the next Golden Bachelor in April, sat down with Jon Jansen on MGoBlue’s In the Trenches podcast earlier this month, where he explained that he knew nothing about the women he would be meeting “until they get out of the limo.”

“But [producers] ask me, ‘What’s your preferences?’ So I just said, ’45-60,’… just being honest, right?” the 66-year-old stud recalled.
Once he was selected, Owens said he had lunch with an executive producer of the ABC reality dating show, where he said, “‘If they’re 60 or over, I’m cutting them.’”
“‘This is not The Silver Bachelor, this is The Golden Bachelor,’” he added. “He goes, ‘But they’re going to be hot, don’t worry about it.’”
Owens acknowledged that he “know[s] they’re going to be beautiful,” but noted that he had “no say in them.” As for his ideal “profile,” he said, “they’ve got to be fit, because I stay in shape and work out and stuff.”
“I told them, ‘Try to stay away from the artificial hips and the wigs,’” he said.
DECIDER reached out to ABC for comment.
Host Jesse Palmer announced the former University of Michigan and Los Angeles Rams football player at Hulu’s Get Real event in April. The series and Palmer made a recent collab with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia in the FX sitcom’s Season 17 trailer, with Palmer helping Danny DeVito‘s Frank Reynolds become the Golden Bachelor.
Owens follows in the footsteps of Gerry Turner, the inaugural Golden Bachelor, who went Instagram official with a new woman in May after divorcing Theresa Nist last spring. Golden Bachelor alum Joan Vassos then kicked off the inaugural Golden Bachelorette season in September 2024.
Season 1 of The Golden Bachelor and Season 1 of The Golden Bachelorette are streaming on Hulu.
