Mom, 54, was pronounced dead after seizure — then woke up in morgue

A beloved mother from England was pronounced dead after collapsing in her kitchen during a seizure — only to be found alive in the morgue with no medical care provided, according to reports.

Olive Martin, 54, had been making toast in her Darlington home on Oct. 13, 2023, when she suffered the medical emergency and was declared dead by paramedics, officials recounted during a court hearing Tuesday, the Telegraph reported.

She was taken to Darlington Hospital Mortuary, where staff later noticed signs of life and she suddenly woke up.

But despite the miraculous discovery, Martin died “some time later” from brain damage, Coroner Jeremy Chipperfield told Crook Coroners Court.

“The difficulty we face is that we don’t know how long she was there,” Chipperfield said, according to The Northern Echo.

“We don’t know how long she had been without oxygen to her brain at that point.”

Tom Barclay-Semple, the attorney representing the grief-stricken and distressed family, argued there was roughly a two-hour window in which Martin received “no treatment at all” after she woke up.

He suggested her tragic “outcome could have been different” if a doctor had been called.

“If Olive had been treated in the way she should have and taken to hospital, would the outcome have been different?” Attorney Tom Barclay-Semple asked the court.

“There is a credible argument to say there was a window of opportunity where Olive received no treatment at all. It was clear that there was a real and immediate risk to her life. [Her life] was in the hands of paramedics.”

The coroner responded that several unknowns still surround her death, prompting Barclay-Semple to counter that they should work backward from when she had the seizure and her body temperature.

The court hearing follows last year’s police investigation into the fatal mishap, which concluded that no criminal charges would be filed, the outlet reported.

Martin was remembered by her devastated family for her kind heart and vibrant personality.

“Our mam will always be remembered for her kind heart, her infectious personality and her positivity day in and day out,” her family said in a statement last year, according to the local outlet.

“She was our warrior, and she will be deeply missing by every person she has ever met.”

The court hearing will continue on Jan. 30.
