Michigan twins hailed as heroes after saving young girl from drowning


A pair of 9-year-old twin sisters were hailed as heroes after their quick thinking saved a little girl from drowning at the bottom of a Michigan pool.

Ava and Addison Apostolopoulos were visiting their grandmother’s home outside Detroit in late June, when they went for a swim in her apartment complex pool.

“We were gonna swim in the pool, jump in the pool and have fun,” Ava told ABC 7.

But when they got in the water, they quickly spotted a 4-year-old unresponsive at the bottom of the pool.

Ava said the little girl was “not moving.”

So the sisters jumped into action, with one racing for goggles to help them see underwater and the other diving under to pull the girl to safety.

They brought the tot to the surface and then alerted the adults nearby. Pool worker Cody Boyette rushed in to perform CPR while the twins’ grandmother called 911.

The little girl was rushed to the hospital and survived thanks to Ava and Addison’s heroic efforts.

And that bravery earned them recognition last week from the Wixom Police Department, which awarded them and Boyette its Civilian Citation Award.

“I have no doubt in my mind that these three people saved a young child’s life,” Wixom Chief of Police Phil Langmeyer said at their award ceremony.

The twins’ father, Jason, said he was deeply proud of them.

“We’re just all about helping, we’re aware of our surroundings and taught them the same thing, if you see something, do something,” he told ABC 7.

Ava and Addison are just pleased their new friend is okay.

“I am very happy she’s alive now, and I hope she’s having a good time. And I’m happy,” Ava said.
