Expectant mother Maria was seated in the passenger seat of a red pickup truck in active labor when her husband was pulled over for speeding, just before 2 a.m. on Saturday.

Maria was found in active labor on the side of the road during a traffic stop in Melvindale, Michigan, on Nov. 8, 2025. Melvindale police department

Melvindale Police Officer Al Hasan called for backup and Senior Officer Corporal Mohamed Hachem arrived at the chaotic scene in a parking lot between a Mexican restaurant and a phone store, according to CBS Detroit.

Hachem took control of the impromptu delivery ward as the 45-year-old woman was “breathing heavy and panicking,” signaling that she was moments away from giving birth in the Detroit suburb, south of Dearborn.

The young officer intervened and determined priority medical assistance was needed, ruling the birth would take place in the vehicle.

Hachem called dispatch for help on his first delivery — only to hear his brother Joe’s voice on the other end of the line.

“You can imagine a young officer in his 20s who’s never had a child, all of a sudden, that has to deliver a baby in a parking lot when he heard his brother’s voice. Mohamed said that calmed him down,” Interim Police Chief Christopher Egan told the outlet.

The dedicated dispatcher guided his brother through the birth, telling the officer exact moves to make to safely welcome the baby into the world.

“Listen carefully, I’ll tell you exactly what to do,” Joe Hachem said, according to audio of the phone call obtained by the outlet.

“Place your hand under the baby’s head right now, and she’s coming out slowly,” he said. “Continuing to stabilize, fire [department] not far out.”

Hachem successfully delivered the baby girl before an ambulance arrived at the scene to take over.

Paramedics cut the umbilical cord inside the truck before transporting both baby and mother to the hospital.

Egan commended both brothers for their actions Saturday night that supported the mother, Maria, and led to the successful birth.

“She was terrified, and they did exactly what they should have done, and very proud of our whole entire team,” Egan said.

“My fear was something is going to happen to my girl or me,” Maria told WXYZ.

The entire incident from the traffic stop to the birth lasted approximately five minutes.

Hachem, who has been on the force for three years, credited his brother with the assist in delivering the child.

“I mean the training you receive at the academy, but it’s not this,” Hacham told the outlet.

“When I watched the video, I was very impressed. Mohamed was very calm, talked his way through it. Took instruction from someone that wasn’t there. That’s hard to do,” Assistant Police Chief Darryl Campbell said.

Police visited Maria and her newborn daughter, Galilea, at the hospital.

They have since been discharged and are home.

“It was a positive experience. It kind of changed her perspective on law enforcement, so I really appreciate that,” Egan said.
