Since that harrowing ordeal 12 years ago, Schumacher has remained out of the spotlight.
He is tended to by wife Corinna, to whom he has been married since 1995, and a team of medical professionals, such as nurses and therapists, “who keep a 24-hour watch,” according to the report.
With speculation swirling about Schumacher’s condition, with one rumor even suggesting blinking was the way of communication, an insider painted a different picture.
“The feeling is he understands some of the things going on around him, but probably not all of them,” the source said.
Schumacher and his family have had to navigate other public tribulations in recent years.
In 2025, three individuals were found guilty of attempted blackmail against Schumacher’s family. It stemmed from the threat to upload hundreds of videos and photos to the dark web unless a multi-million dollar payment was made, according to the BBC.
The year prior, rumors swirled that Schumacher would make an appearance at his daughter’s wedding, reports a family confidant pushed back on, per The Sun.
Schumacher won seven world titles and 91 race wins before retiring from the sport in 2012.
