Mets’ young pitchers changing the vibes — and costs for future

In the immediate future, there are questions all over the Mets’ rotation, which suddenly features three rookies — including Brandon Sproat, set to make his debut Sunday — with a total of five career starts; Sean Manaea, who has struggled for length and recently for results; Clay Holmes, who has completed the sixth inning in one of his past 15 starts; Kodai Senga, whose ineffectiveness has prompted a real question of whether he will be sent to Triple-A Syracuse; and David Peterson, who owns a 7.56 ERA in his past five starts.

In the next-couple-year future, though?

“It’s amazing,” Manaea said recently, looking ahead to the Mets’ starting group for upcoming seasons. “What Nolan and Jonah have done so far is inspiring. They’ve just been doing it. These have been some big situations they’ve come up in, and they’ve delivered.”

Nolan McLean and Jonah Tong have brought intangibles that can jolt a clubhouse and tangibles that have helped the Mets win each of their combined five starts. McLean has allowed four runs in 26 ⅓ innings (1.37 ERA) and been dominant from the day he was called up, while Tong showed intriguing stuff in his debut victory over the Marlins.
