Mets send Luisangel Acuna to minors as Mark Vientos nears return

Mark Vientos will have to wait for his return — and Luisangel Acuña is headed to the minors for more playing time — as the Mets made several roster moves prior to Monday’s series opener against Atlanta at Citi Field.

Vientos was eligible to return from a right hamstring strain on Monday, but Carlos Mendoza said over the weekend in Philadelphia that the team could choose to give him more at-bats in his minor league rehab assignment.

But even with Vientos still not in Queens, the Mets decided to option Acuña to Syracuse, replacing him on the roster with outfielder Travis Jankowski.

Acuña got the start on Sunday in Philadelphia, but it was his first in a week and the Mets likely want the 23-year-old to get more playing time.

Jankowski can serve as a pinch-runner if necessary and the Mets still have Ronny Mauricio and Brett Baty as infield options.

Jankowski last played for the Mets in the majors in 2022 and signed a minor league deal to rejoin the organization in June, after being released by Tampa Bay.
