Fellow catcher Hayden Senger was called up to take Alvarez’s spot on the roster.

Alvarez, once the Mets’ top prospect, has struggled at the plate, slashing .236/.319/.333 with three homers and 11 RBIs in 138 plate appearances this year.

Alvarez did go 2-for-5 with a 452-foot home run in the Mets’ 11-4 win on Saturday.

Luis Torrens will ostensibly take over the reins as the Mets’ No. 1 catcher for as long as Alvarez is in the minors.
